Voortrekker frieze tour (24 May 2009)
|
A highly informative talk on the historical frieze at the
Voortrekker monument was presented by Astrid Schwenke. Some of the
interesting new facts that were revealed through months of research...
|
- Coloured people are only portrayed on two panels.
- 70 coloured people were murdered along with the 30 men of
Retief. However, not one representative of this group appears on the
panel where the negotiations between Retief and Dingane are taking
place. It is said that after some complaints, a plaque honouring this
group were mounted on the panel. It has since vanished ...we will keep
you posted.
- Pieter Moloto, a black man who assisted the sculptures by
preparing the clay, was used as the model for the Barolong Chief,
Moroka and that of King Dingane.
Hennie Potgieter (one of the artists) always wore a flowery
overcoat to protect his clothes while working. He also had quite long
hair. One day Moloto entered the workshop. Not knowing that it was
Potgieter, he greeted him "Morning Madam!". When Potgieter turned around
Moloto quickly responded "and to you to Sir"
